The aging of
the Baby Boomer population —
America’s “entrepreneurialist” generation — likely
accelerates the number
of owners seeking an exit
during the next 20 years. |

Groundbreaking Survey |
| White Horse Advisors, in
cooperation with Vistage International, presents a groundbreaking
survey of owners of closely-held businesses regarding exit planning
and succession planning. Closely-held companies
constitute one of the most important, dynamic and growing segments of
the U.S. economy. According to CMI Research, these businesses account for nearly half of private
sector payroll, generate approximately 80 percent of net new private
sector jobs in the last 10 years and produce more than 50 percent of
non-farm private gross domestic product (GDP).

All Owners Exit from Their Businesses |
| Business owners of
closely-held companies tend to be among the most affluent and
influential members of local and national society. Inevitably, all
owners exit from their businesses. An owner’s approach to exit
planning and business continuity planning impacts not only his/her
personal life, but also the surrounding economy and community.
How do owners think about, prepare for and eventually execute
their exit plan or business continuity strategy? How do trends in
owner exits and exit planning track against the Baby Boomer age
wave? The challenges to understanding these issues are
significant. Privately-held companies
generally share little data. Most exit strategies do not require
public disclosure. And the tendency to discuss succession planning
(orderly transfer of management) synonymously with exit planning
(orderly conversion of ownership to personal wealth) obscures many
important exit planning issues. |
